How Epstein Brokered JPMorgan's #2 Into Private Meetings With Heads of State
When Jes Staley was promoted to number two at JPMorgan in September 2009, Sultan Bin Sulayem told Epstein: 'Did you see your friend Jes Staley just got promoted.' Epstein replied: 'it was not an accident.' Within months Epstein had arranged a private Sultan-Staley dinner, Staley was invited to meet 14 foreign ministers, and Peter Mandelson was pitching him Congo mining.
On September 30, 2009, Sultan Bin Sulayem emailed Epstein: "Did you see your friend Jes Staley just got promoted to #2 at JP Morgan" (EFTA02526370-0). Epstein replied: "it was not an accident.." (vol00009-efta00740105-pdf-0).
Two months later, Epstein was coordinating Staley's travel: "Jes is re arranging his schedule to make a trip to the middle east// saudi etc. call me" (vol00009-efta00742801-pdf-0). On December 9, he arranged a private dinner between the two men: "sultan , jes is free thurs, from 5-10 p.m. where and when, only the two of you please" (vol00009-efta00743331-pdf-0).
The introduction produced a banking relationship. On April 15, 2010, Sultan wrote directly to Staley at JPMorgan: "Dear Jes, DUKES HOTEL LIMITED — REFINANCING REQUIREMENTS — We have a requirement of refinancing the loan" (EFTA02426003-0). The chairman of DP World was asking JPMorgan's number two for a loan, through a channel Epstein had built.
In October 2010, Epstein sent Staley an invitation to a meeting with fourteen foreign ministers and heads of state. "jeffrey , please come. you may have private time with each . you security clearance is approved." The list included Nigeria's Henry Odein Ajumogobia, Morocco's Taieb Fassi-Fihri, Qatar's Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabor Al-Thani, Lebanon's Prime Minister Saad Harari, Pakistan's Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi, and the UAE's Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan (vol00009-efta00755193-pdf-0).
The same week, Peter Mandelson wrote to Staley: "In Congo Brazzaville last week, I talked at length with President Sassou Ntuesso, including about the above new mine." Staley replied: "I will find out. Sounds interesting" (EFTA02418828-3, EFTA02418828-4). Mandelson was pitching Congo mining to JPMorgan's second-in-command through the Epstein network.
