Djibouti: How Epstein Played Both Sides of a Power Struggle

Sultan introduced Epstein to the President of Djibouti at the Waldorf Astoria. The same month, Epstein was socializing with Abdourahman Boreh, the president's rival. Sultan warned: 'Plz don't mention to Boreh you met Djibouti president as they both hate each other.' Epstein kept both relationships for seven years.

In early September 2011, Epstein was already socializing with Abdourahman Boreh in New York. After a dinner with Michael Wolff, Epstein sent Wolff the djiboutiplan.com website about Boreh. Wolff replied: "Well that was great fun. I loved that guy. And Victoria loved you" (EFTA01854877-0). The next day, Epstein wrote to Sultan: "our djibouti friend was a lot of fun, he canceled the girls he had coming, im not sure why?" (EFTA01853867-0). Five days later Epstein asked Sultan for Boreh's email. Sultan provided it the same day (EFTA01856749-0, EFTA01775683-0).

On September 24, Sultan offered something bigger. "I am meeting Djibouti president tomorrow at 12:15 at his suit at Waldorf Astoria I told him I will bring a friend it will be interesting for you to meet him" (EFTA01775224-1). Epstein replied: "great" (EFTA01855135-0).

Five days later Sultan sent the warning: "Plz don't mention to Bomb you met Djibouti president as they both hate each other." Epstein: "i know , but thanks for the reminder" (EFTA01851941-0).

Sultan had his own history with Djibouti. When Epstein asked "Do you still have the port there?" Sultan replied: "No we don't have the port any more there was so much corruption that we with drew from the budding process" (EFTA01881965-0). DP World had lost the Doraleh concession in a dispute that would end up in London courts for a decade.

Epstein's associate David Stern became Boreh's legal advocate. In October 2015 Stern reported: "helping Boreh win his case. Got this done, quite funky and happy it worked!" and linked a Daily Mail expose of Lord Falconer representing Djibouti (EFTA01793405-0). By March 2016: "Boreh won his case 100%." Epstein: "give him my congrats" (EFTA02469402-1). In October, Epstein told Sultan: "I had tea today with boreh fun" (EFTA02450169-0). In 2017, Stern asked Epstein to "check Rothschild for Boreh" (EFTA02655444-0).

The thread ran until Epstein's arrest. In December 2018 Stern wrote: "Saw Boreh and discussed waterholes" (EFTA02611122-0). Three months earlier, Jide Zeitlin had sent Epstein the Financial Times article about Djibouti nationalizing Red Sea port shares, adding: "I hope your pal's sojourn in Tel Aviv this summer with his daughter was more effective than his efforts on the African continent. The arrogance with which he dealt with me is remarkable given his track record, or lack thereof" (EFTA02624197-0).
