Deepak Chopra and the Wine of Moroccan Youth

On August 4, 2016, Deepak Chopra wrote to Epstein: 'Only this morning I sniffed the wine of Moroccan youth.' Epstein replied: 'the type of wine that does not get better with age.' The archive shows Epstein hosted Chopra at his home and introduced him to Ehud Barak, Sultan Bin Sulayem, and Jabor Al Thani.

On August 4, 2016, Epstein opened with a question: "where is your conciosness es view on pleasure and pain / what is it, how generated etc. when are you back" (vol00009-efta00822029-pdf-0). It was addressed to Deepak Chopra, the wellness author and founder of the Chopra Foundation.

Chopra replied from a train to Provence. "My consciousness resides non locally in a field of infinite possibilities, occasionally drawn into the wheel if karma, bouncing between the opposites of pleasure and pain, joy and sorrow." He quoted Rumi: "Beyond all ideas of right and wrong there is a field. I will meet you there." Then: "Right now on a train to Provence sitting next to an old woman. She has the whiff of death" (vol00009-efta00644596-pdf-0). Epstein replied: "dont we all" (vol00009-efta00822045-pdf-0).

Chopra's next message shifted register. "As the ocean draws nigh the smell gets strong. I'm a doctor of the soul. I diagnose through qualia, youth, vitality, exuberance, sensual sexuality, joy, sorrow death, they have different odors. Only this morning I sniffed the wine of Moroccan youth" (vol00009-efta00644596-pdf-1).

Epstein answered: "the type of wine that does not get better with age :))" (vol00009-efta00644596-pdf-7). Chopra: "In men it can get better, for a while" (vol00009-efta00822058-pdf-0). Epstein: "i love self decetption" (vol00009-efta00822063-pdf-0). Chopra: "I said for a while. Some like it slow" (vol00009-efta00698590-pdf-0). Epstein: "and for some . slow -is their top speed" (vol00009-efta00822067-pdf-0). Chopra closed with a Tagore poem about songs unsung and instruments never properly strung. Epstein signed off: "friends help you keep those strings in tune" (vol00009-efta00822072-pdf-0).

The archive shows more than a passing acquaintance. In September 2016, Epstein wrote to Ehud Barak: "Deepak chopra is there in aspen with you, hes very amusing and a good guy filled with troves of stories. if you see him, you might enjoy a conversation" (EFTA02451471-0). In February 2017, Epstein emailed Jabor Al Thani: "deepak chopra will be staying with me on sat evening sun morning in palm beach great health ideas" (EFTA02660692-0). After the weekend, Chopra wrote directly to Jabor: "Dear Jabor. I really enjoyed our evening together. I would like to stay in touch" (EFTA02660250-0). Epstein was brokering relationships between Chopra and his Gulf contacts.

In August 2016, Epstein told Sultan Bin Sulayem: "Billy, sultan was just at chopra a place" (EFTA02454660-1). Chopra's center in Carlsbad, California was a stop on Epstein's circuit of introductions. They discussed consciousness and pleasure. Epstein introduced Chopra to his network. Chopra stayed at Epstein's house.

Ten years before the Moroccan youth exchange, on April 3, 2006, Epstein had sent Nadia Marcinkova an article about Moulay Ismail, "the last Sharifian Emperor of Morocco," who "sired more than 1,000 children." The article discussed the evolutionary logic of infidelity. Epstein wrote: "thought you might want to read this" (bfeb84488c2092cad6f4eec172af36dc-0).
