Joi Ito served as Director of the MIT Media Lab from 2011 to 2019. He appears in Epstein's archive in the Zimbabwe currency thread. On June 12, 2015, Epstein forwarded him a Guardian article about Zimbabwe's demonetization and proposed using the country as a test case for a new currency and economic system, describing Zimbabwe as "a great petrie dish." Ito responded "Ha! Amazing" and then asked "You mean Mugabe? Are you buddies?" Epstein replied that he was not but "can easily get his attention." No follow-through appears in the archive. In September 2019, the New Yorker reported that Ito had accepted donations from Epstein for the Media Lab after Epstein's 2008 sex offender conviction, and had disguised the source. Ito resigned as Media Lab director the same day the story published.
