Somaliwood Studios, eau en bouteille et farine d'os : le pipeline d'investissement d'Epstein au Somaliland

Le 9 août 2012, quelqu'un dans le cercle d'Epstein envoya un email avec pour objet "i had a fun idea." Le projet : construire un studio de cinéma au Somaliland et l'appeler Somaliwood Studios. L'expéditeur écrivit : "What if we put together a small group that professionalized the African film industry. There is currently a small movement called Nollywood (in Nigeria) and the big boss there is a YGL. She was telling me how hard it was since no one knew how to de film." La solution : "we could build a small studio in Somaliland and called it SOMALIWOOD STUDIOS. Imagine the cool filming...beaches, desert, etc. We could invite muslim and all sorts of groups to film there" (EFTA01876256-0).

Le pitch incluait de la programmation pour enfants : "Could do like Sesame Street type stuff (children's programming etc for African kids)." Il affirmait que le Somaliland avait une "serious tech ability" et proposait de construire un studio d'effets numériques. L'expéditeur mit Epstein en copie : "I'm copying Jeffrey since he might also think this would be FUN FUN FUN." Son identité est caviariée dans les archives. Aucun email de suivi ne confirme que le studio ait été poursuivi.

Somaliwood n'était pas la seule proposition commerciale liée au Somaliland à parvenir à Epstein en 2012. Le 25 avril, un associé écrivit au sujet des réserves d'eau du Somaliland : "there are huge water reserves, untapped ( and dean) near port city of berbera..direct access to Saudi market. Easy to ship. Minimal transport. Again Somaliland" Un nom de société apparut dans un message suivant : "AfricEAU." Epstein répondit le jour même : "I like it" (EFTA01885124-0, EFTA01885540-0).

Trois semaines plus tard, Philippe von Stauffenberg écrivit sur des projets commerciaux plus larges au Somaliland. Il proposa une activité de gestion des déchets solides comme filiale d'une fondation, énumérant les opportunités dont "desalination, water bottling and of course bonemeal in Somaliland." Il mentionna aussi la construction de logements durables à Luanda, en Angola, et de maisons au Tchad. Il écrivit : "I think that outside of water and other opportunities in Africa we should seriously position the solid waste business soon as it is probably the most actionable from my end with real money that I can put behind that" (EFTA02555040-0).

Ces propositions commerciales arrivèrent la même année où Sultan Bin Sulayem informait Epstein de ses rencontres avec des chefs d'État africains et où Epstein faisait fructifier sa relation avec Karim Wade entre Pékin et Paris.
