Éthiopie : Brunel voulait des « interesting girls », Epstein voulait le monopole du tabac
En juillet 2012, Epstein informa son partenaire commercial yéménite que son ami qui « owns a modeling agency » souhaitait se rendre en Éthiopie parce qu'il pensait y trouver des « interesting girls. » Quatre jours plus tard, Jean-Luc Brunel confirma. Trois ans après, le même partenaire proposa à Epstein un prêt de 20 millions de dollars adossé à l'unique monopole cigarettier éthiopien.
Le 2 juillet 2012, Epstein écrivit à Shaher Abdulhak. Il ajouta : "if you go to ethiopia. my very good friend that owns a modeling agency would love to go. as he thinks there are interesting girls there" (EFTA01873908-0).
Quatre jours plus tard, Jean-Luc Brunel écrivit à Epstein depuis Paris. Il énuméra son emploi du temps, puis : "NY except if I can go to Ethiopia with you" (EFTA01768711-2).
Shaher avait ses propres opérations en Éthiopie. Il détenait 60 pour cent de National Tobacco Enterprise Ethiopia, l'unique usine de cigarettes du pays, un monopole constitué en 1946 sous le nom d'Imperial Tobacco Factory. En avril 2015, il sollicita Epstein directement : "Need 20 $ mill we are short to pay for my ethiopian cigarettes for 360 days" (EFTA01744617-4). Shaher détailla la structure : une société caïmanaise appelée Sheba Investment détenait les parts, le gouvernement éthiopien les 40 pour cent restants, la production atteignait cinq milliards de cigarettes par an avec un objectif de doublement, et l'entreprise commercialisait Marlboro sous licence exclusive. Il évaluait sa participation à 270 millions de dollars (EFTA01744617-5).
Epstein s'intéressa. "i would very much like to be helpful. what is the cash flow, income and balance sheet look like" (EFTA01744617-10). Shaher indiqua un bénéfice net de 12 millions de dollars l'année précédente et projetait une valorisation de 500 à 600 millions de dollars fin 2017. Il expliqua la difficulté : les prêteurs du Golfe considéraient le financement du tabac comme "Makrooh" (religieusement découragé), "though they all smoke (hypocrisy)" (EFTA01744617-9). Aucun email des archives ne confirme qu'Epstein ait accordé le prêt.
Shaher se rendait régulièrement à Addis-Abeba. En juin 2012, il écrivit depuis la capitale : "Sheraton they did not have Wifi and their Internet very bad" (EFTA01882115-1). Epstein le mit en garde : "fewer. don't trust anyone." En mars 2014, Shaher était de nouveau à Addis-Abeba, puis repartit pour le Soudan en écrivant : "brother cousin enjoying with Beautiful faces sun and blue skies. Poor me" (EFTA01930885-0). En octobre 2014, Sultan envoya à Epstein une photo légendée "WITH PRESIDENT IF ETHIOPIA" (EFTA01801857-0).
