Le laboratoire d'IA qu'Epstein n'a jamais financé

Le 25 juin 2011, Ben Goertzel écrivit à Epstein avec un objet qui ressemblait à une confession : "What I'd really like to be doing." Goertzel, un chercheur en IA qui dirigeait le projet OpenCog depuis Hong Kong, ouvrit par un salut : "Hope you enjoyed Africa!! (or are still enjoying it, if you're still there)." Puis il lança son pitch. Quinze personnes, quatre ans, Hong Kong, rien que de la recherche en AGI. Coût : 3 millions de dollars. "Would you be willing to fund half of this on a 'matching' basis?" demanda-t-il. "$3M is so little compared to what the world spends on so much nonsense" (vol00009-efta00628447-pdf-0).

Epstein finançait déjà un effort OpenCog plus modeste. Une entrée de calendrier de janvier 2013 par Lesley Groff notait : "Reminder: Ben Goertzel around until Jan. 15th" (vol00009-efta00398699-pdf-0). Le même mois, Goertzel envoya à Epstein une "List of some interesting people" pour son réseau (vol00009-efta00715319-pdf-0). En 2014, Goertzel avait cofondé iCog Labs à Addis-Abeba avec le roboticien éthiopien Getnet Aseffa Gezaw. Le labo avait été financé en amorçage par l'investisseur du Maryland Sander Olsen, pas par Epstein.

Le 14 mai 2014, un communiqué PR Newswire parut : "The Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation Helps Launch Artificial Intelligence in Ethiopia." La coordinatrice RP d'Epstein écrivit à Tyler Shears, qui gérait jeffreyepstein.net : "Could you boost the press article below?" (EFTA02583384-0). Shears transféra l'alerte Google à Epstein avec un seul mot : "Live" (EFTA01927888-1).

Le lendemain, quelqu'un transféra le communiqué à Epstein avec un seul mot : "Ethiopia?" Epstein ignora complètement la question. Il répondit : "when are you next in ny? how was boris?" La réponse : "Boris is in a rough spot. I am worried for him. I loved seeing him" (EFTA01924912-0, EFTA01924912-1). Boris était Boris Nikolic, le conseiller scientifique de la Fondation Gates plus tard désigné exécuteur testamentaire suppléant d'Epstein.

Le 1er juin, la rédactrice RP proposa un article à Forbes : "I would suggest my writing a feature on AI in Ethiopia. I can get more info easily from Ben Goertzel at OpenCog" (EFTA02721744-0). Onze jours plus tard, elle écrivit : "Let's pin down an article topic for Jeffrey by tomorrow. Can I do AI in Ethiopia?" Le même email révéla que la fondation mettait en place "a d/b/a called Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation" et tentait de se faire référencer au Foundation Center (EFTA01918797-0).

Fin juillet, la rédactrice RP dit à Shears qu'elle était "midst article on Seth Lloyd's work" et avait "another article ready: AI in Ethiopia." Elle mentionna que la recherche de Martin Nowak sur la coopération avait déjà été relue. Elle demanda à Shears de "change the word, Addis Ababa Labs for iCog Labs throughout the front page article" et d'ajouter la mission d'iCog (EFTA01911668-0, EFTA01853459-0).

Le 15 août 2014, Goertzel embarqua sur un vol de Washington à Addis-Abeba et rédigea un long essai sur iCog Labs. Il l'envoya à Epstein et à la rédactrice RP. Au milieu figurait un correctif : "By the way, technically, Epstein Foundation hasn't actually funded iCog Labs or the OpenCog researchers working there. Epstein Foundation has funded the OpenCog Hong Kong effort, which has been very very very much appreciated; but the $$ provided all went to the Hong Kong effort." iCog Labs, expliqua-t-il, "was seed-funded by Maryland investor Sander Olsen, and currently is self-supporting based on consulting revenues." Puis il ajouta : "NOW, since Jeffrey has been so generous to me over the years, and has also helped with OpenCog HK, I don't mind there being a press release associating Epstein Foundation with iCog Labs. I'm just describing the situation for you in detail so that you can be sure the wording in your article accurately reflects reality" (vol00009-efta00995144-pdf-0).

La rédactrice répondit : "This is great. Thank you so much. I'll read through everything and get a draft back to you for review. Thank you also for clarifying the funding" (vol00009-efta00693914-pdf-0). Elle continua à rédiger l'article.

En octobre, la rédactrice rencontra un problème. Goertzel "likes the AI article but too much of a stretch to have Jeffrey's name in the title," écrivit-elle à Shears. Les options : "Jeffrey makes a contribution to the AI lab in Ethiopia (they're doing amazing work)" ou elle "redraft to 'Jeffrey advances AI in Hong Kong" (EFTA02676867-0). En août 2015, elle plaça l'article dans Techonomy. "The Guardian initially wanted this piece but then retracted because they felt the Ethiopian government was too corrupt," rapporta-t-elle. "The BBC also wanted it but was only going to include a small snippet." Goertzel répondit : "Looks great! Congrats on the publication, and thanks for getting iCog the publicity, the guys in Addis will be thrilled" (EFTA01745739-0).

La relation continua. En septembre 2014, Goertzel proposa à Epstein la YaNetu Intelligent Teaching Tablet, un dispositif de tutorat IA pour les enfants éthiopiens. "Is there anyone in your circle who would be interested in this sort of investment?" demanda-t-il, cherchant 75 000 dollars en amorçage (vol00009-efta00869341-pdf-0). En mars 2016, Goertzel invita Epstein à visiter l'Éthiopie : "Getnet who runs our AI/robotics lab there can show you around ... He's a lot of fun and also knows everyone in gov't and business there." Epstein répondit : "send me some readings that will bring me up to speed on your work" (vol00009-efta00830786-pdf-0).

En juillet 2016, Goertzel demanda si Epstein voulait que le sponsoring de la conférence AGI-16 soit listé sous "Enhanced Education again?" Epstein répondit : "no jeffrey epstein. is enough" (vol00009-efta00671311-pdf-0). En octobre, Epstein s'envoya une liste de contacts. "Ben goertzel" apparaissait dans un flux de prénoms et noms aux côtés de "ehud," "jagland," "boris," "larry summers," "sultan," et "jabor" (HOUSE_OVERSIGHT_026632-0).
